9-5. Running effective meetings

As a project manager or team leader one your important roles is to run effective meetings.  Meetings can consume large amounts of valuable time and can be unproductive if not run effectively. Here are some guidelines for running effective meetings.

  1. Meetings should be held primarily for group decision making
  2. avoid weekly progress report meetings
  3. Plan the meeting
  4. Start on time
  5. Identify meeting leader(s)
  6. State meeting objectives
  7. Assign a person to take minutes
  8. Keep meeting on track
  9. Enforce respect for all participants
  10. Summarize meeting achievements
  11. End the meeting on or before scheduled time
  12. Distribute minutes within one working day (agreements and commitments)
